Marketplaces and their influence on the competitiveness of small and medium-sized companies [Los marketplaces y su influencia en la competitividad de las pequeñas y medianas empresas]

Marketplaces are digital platforms that connect multiple sellers and buyers, facilitating transactions and access to a wide variety of products. This study aims to estimate the impact of presence in marketplaces on the competitiveness of SMEs within the commercial sector of the Metropolitan District of Quito, evaluating their growth and sustainability. A mixed methodological approach was used. The results indicate that SMEs that value their participation in marketplaces as very important report significant improvements in competitiveness and sales, while those with a minimal perception show limited progress. 76.92% of companies see an increase in sales after joining these platforms. The active and strategic adoption of marketplaces is essential for SMEs to remain competitive, highlighting the importance of carefully evaluating the commission structure to optimise benefits in an evolving digital environment.
